Sustainable Me: Etched Glass Spice Jars

So the one thing about me is that I love coffee. What I also love, is glass jars. Mostly I reuse them into dry bean containers. Or paint brush containers. Or pencil cups.

Anyway, I was so uberly excited to see this AWESOME tutorial online, for a DIY spice jars! Oh man.

Cute, right? Go to the instructables page to learn how to make this! It’s such a neat idea. I don’t normally do glass etching (mostly because I never have) but for this, I really think I will!

In other news I got a new cell phone. It’s an android. This means I can tweet, and update my facebook status from my phone and even open microsoft word documents. And check my email. The thing is, I’m not really a phone person. And now I’ve got this fancy shmancy new Android phone with all these bells and whistles….I just don’t want to end up like every other parent I see in the playground, talking on their cell phones while their children play, not even paying attention to their children. I mean, is that what we’ve come to? In this digital age, we have made a choice to neglect the face to face dialog.

ANYWAYS…

This year I really want to have more plants around the house and NO I will NOT forget to water them, I promise. I SWEAR!  I want my apartment full of lovely green plants. I do. I love plants but I sadly am so busy and so absent minded that I forget to water the poor things. This year I’m going to tell my four year old to remind me, and trust me, she will. All the time and probably twice or three times a day.

That’s all for now.

Bad Pics of a cool project

So this is another item I made for CHA, which was this past weekend. I used a paper mache bird from Eco Green Crafts, and painted it white. Then, I sprayed a brown walnut ink by Ranger Ink (Adirondack somethingorother…), and then went over it with the lovely fusable fiber by Art Institute Glitter. That stuff was so much fun. You have to glue it on first, then go over it with your heat gun, if you want to do this too.

Then, I put some chain link over the bird. I used it because I don’t have jump rings in this particular color, so I figured why the heck not.

On a more personal note, I was thinking about old friends and facebook. I realized I do have a lot of old friends of mine from my childhood, on facebook. There’s people I went to high school with, church, youth group and even elementary school. It’s interesting when you knew a person, to then look at their photos and see the things they’ve done, and what twists life has taken for them; how many children they have, who came out of the closet, who moved across the country and who still lives in New Jersey.

Photographs tell you a lot about a person, I think. Through a picture, you can see how happy a person is, or how much suffering they have gone through. It’s interesting to look through photos of old friends and think of the journey that life takes you on, don’t you think?

Anyway, that’s what was on my mind.

On another note, I’ve finished a lace crocheted cowl, and two pairs of slippers: one pair for my newborn, and one pair for my four year old. Next is a knitted something or other, and then slippers for me. I do have to say, I really do enjoy making cowls and scarves. I guess it’s because I use them quite a bit. I like to make stuff that I use; like jewelry for example. I wear a lot and often, so I enjoy making it a lot and often.

Well, that’s all for now.

My Box of Secrets at CHA

I just made this little box, and it’s on it’s on display at the Eco Green Crafts Booth, at CHA. Sadly, I could not attend; not with two kids, anyway. Maybe next year. Or maybe chicago. I’d have to find a friend in chicago for me and my troop to stay with, of course.  I say my troop, because it’d be me, my two kids, and my hubby (for babysitting reasons, LOL).

Anyway, yes. I made this. You should know by now that I am (or at least I try to be) an eco friendly momma. So when Eco Green Crafts asked me to make a few things for them, I jumped at the chance!

They make wonderful paper mache items such as this one. This is a small chest of drawers that I plan on using as a jewelry box. Being that I make jewelry, I obviously have SO MUCH of it. They also make paints, glass bits, glue and other things. I used their glue and glass bits on the box, as well as paints, to paint the box.

I used pen and ink to draw on the box, and pigment markers for a little extra color. I really don’t know how I feel about the box. I mean that I am unsure as to weather or not I like it. But we’ll go with a yes for now.

Anyway this little box, along with one other piece,  is on display at CHA, at the Eco Green Crafts, booth #2688. Stop by and check it out!

Inspiration Thursday

This week is the Lunar New Year. That means that there are celebrations in the streets of chinatown, and those that celebrate this holiday, celebrate the year of the Water Dragon. The dragon, in chinese astrology, brings prosperity, good luck and change. I’ve been told that being born under this sign is a very auspicious and prestigious thing.

The Lunar New Year makes me think this year of transformation.

Perhaps that is why so many people make resolutions, go on diets, and try to improve themselves; because the new year represents a new chance-a door that is ready to be opened.

I don’t make resolutions. Maybe it’s because I’m a sagitarius and really do not like being tied down to a rule. I don’t know. What I do know is that transformation happens when we allow it to happen, when we welcome change with open arms.

So this year, I’m going to welcome change with open arms. What about you? How do you wish to transform yourself?

Sustainable Me: Wheat Grass Eggs

One thing I love about living in an apartment is that it is always spring time. I say this, because being that we have no backyard, we can grow plants indoors anytime. And since our heaters are close to the window, this makes it easy for us to grow plants indoors, as they won’t get so frigid. Our old apartment was structured differently and in the winter, our poor plants would freeze. Yes, it gets that cold in New York City.

And now, once again, Pinterest has led me to the awesomest, coolest most amazing find EVER. Wheatgrass eggs!

I LOVE this. LOVE. Thanks to Momtastic (BTW, WHY am I JUST finding out about this site now?!) for the awesome tutorial! Recycle your eggs, and your egg container, and plant some deliciously healthy wheat grass! You can use it in salads, or if you’ve got one, add it to your juice! If you want some nutritional information on it go HERE.

Oh, and if you want to know where to buy the wheatgrass seeds, go HERE.

That’s all for today. Ta for now!

Handmade Vintage Necklace

I just made a pretty necklace for myself:

I call it “Handmade Vintage” because the leather flowers, and the Ivory Buddha are both vintage pieces from old jewelry that I had stored away. ACTUALLY, the little Buddha was from a vintage necklace I bought on the street two summers ago. I bought it thinking, “I KNOW I can remake this into something fabulous!” And low and behold I have, so far.

The turquoise beads are uhm….from etsy, I think, as well as the ohm symbol. I LOVE this necklace! I’m happy with how it turned out.

I’ve been making more “stuff” lately. This is because my daughter and I spend our QT together while baby Dharma is napping. When she naps in the morning, we make stuff. When she naps in the afternoon, it’s either baking or netflix. Or both. Netflix is great because I can work on my crochet or knit.

I’ve been crocheting lately. I’m trying to figure a design for a couple hats. I detest making hats. I don’t know why. But I do. I’d much rather make cowls. I never get tired of making those.

It could be the simple fact that I also detest WEARING hats. I really do. They mess up my hair, and I feel like they make my face look weird. My husband thinks I look fabulous in them though.

On another note, I really would like to go yarn shopping. And when I say yarn shopping, I mean REALLY go yarn shopping.  Actually scratch that. I’d like to go supply shopping just in general. I haven’t bought any new art supplies in about 2 or 3 months (except yarn). I know. Yarn does TOO count. But does it still count if 90% of what I make is for sale? At any rate, I’m in need of new drawing pens, paper, gel pens and other things. So I’m thinking that soon and very soon I will go to the art supply store (did you catch that, I was thinking of the christian hymn-it’s stuck in my head).

Well, ta for now.

Review: Creative Doodling & Beyond by Stephanie Corfee

Today, I thought I’d share a book that I’ve been reading. I usually have a couple of books that I’m reading (all at the same time, yes). Before I buy a book, I always read the reviews, so I thought it fitting to post a few of my book findings here.

First I have to say that it takes a lot to impress me, craft wise. It could be living with my “classically trained artist” husband. It could be living in New York City. Whatever it is, I do not get impressed easily, especially not be crafting books.

I decided to read the book, “Creative Doodling & Beyond” by Stephanie Corfee with low expectations. Honestly, I doodle already. But I do love the cover art, and the description on the cover states, “Inspiring exersize, prompts and projects….” and the truth is, we could all do with a bit of inspiration, can’t we?

The book is written by artist Stephanie Corfee (published by Walter Foster) who has an awesome website and a cool etsy store, where she sells her artwork in prints & stationary.

This book starts out with giving you a short list of INEXPENSIVE art supplies that she uses in her doodling. I love love love when books give you a low-fi list of art supplies, rather than those with a laundry list of rare supplies that the one store across town carries. It’s great to be low maintenance in art.

Anyway, she does very little talking, and does a lot of instruction. I love that. She delves right into the drawing exersizes, giving you an idea of not actually HOW to doodle, but how to free yourself from tension when you are doodling. Great, huh?

She goes in from the simple lines to more complex exercises with you, making you feel like you can really do this, you can really take your drawing to the next level.

The book ALSO contains art/craft projects that incorporate your drawings. Things like gift tags, bags, and even fabric work!

The Bottom Line: Creative Doodling & Beyond is a great book that helps you bring your drawing to the next level, and is a GREAT book for those crafters who feel they can’t draw.

Note: I wasn’t paid for this post. On occasion I may receive a free book or product here and there and will be posting my opinion & a review on occasion.

Inspiration Thursday

Think about a person you admire. What makes you admire them? The life they lead? The kind of spouse they have, or the home they life in? The material possessions they own? The friends they have? Whatever it is that makes you admire them, think on this: it is the choices they made in life that got them to where they are.

Envy and jealousy are things that when entering the craft world some years back, I never thought I would see. Why? I mean…why entertain a feeling of wanting what someone else has? Instead, create YOUR life. Make YOUR life grand and amazing. Don’t be filled with feelings that only make you look stupid and foolish.

I know that sounds harsh. But it’s true. Don’t want what you don’t have. It’s silly. If you want something, go for it. It’s really that simple. Yes it is. YES it is. Stop arguing with me. It so is. Just pursue what you want in life. Make the right choices and fess up to the bad ones you’ve made. Life is really not that complicated. People are complicated.

So now….what kinds of POSITIVE choices can you make TODAY to make things better?
