The Zen of Hand Spinning

There really is a zen quality to hand spinning. I’ve done quite a few skeins of yarn now, and I find that I REALLY am quite relaxed during and after the process of hand spinning.

A few of my FB buddies have asked, and YES I do plan on selling my hand spun yarns. I plan on releasing a collection of hand spun yarns in a few weeks, or when I get the chance, whichever comes first.

I do love to spin. I love that I am making a scarf with my own hand spun yarn, on hand carved wooden needles. That makes me feel so holistic, you know?

In other news, I have discovered a couple things about my infant Dharma; One is that she screams bloody murder when she is just the slightest bit sleepy. Two is that she is quite easily distracted by the sound of music. Two is that due to the aforementioned, she does further enjoy Radiohead. She in fact sings along. She also loves Elvis Perkins and finds Bob Marley to make her give in to sleepiness.

Dakota had picture day today. SHE ACTUALLY SMILED. You have no idea how awesome that is. I look forward to being the typical parent and showing anyone who will pay attention, the picture of her in Pre-K.

A Night In Tunisia-sort of

Well, I titled this post as such, because I have been trying my hand at tunisian crochet, and for the life of me, all I can think of is the tune entitled “A Night in Tunisia” with Dizzy Gilespie.

Anyhow, I made this scarf for my darling husband.

I made it for him for Christmas. I had a nice shade of grey, which is a good color for a “guyly” guy, don’t you think?

I rather like Tunisian crochet. I don’t have the fancy hooks, but I might just buy a set soon. Next, I’m going to work on the knit stitch. Hmm….what else…I’m working on a knitted shawl. That ought to come out rather lovely.

So far, being a mom of two children is….I dunno. I mean, how do you put into one word? It is amazing and fun, and wonderful and at times stressful and challenging. Thank goodness for my crockpot, I’ll tell you that much!

Oh, and if you’re curious, HERE’S the link to “A Night In Tunisia” by Dizzy Gilespie.

Crocheted Tear Drops

Recently, I made a couple more pairs of lovely crocheted earrings.

So, these are for sale in my shop, of course.

Anything else to report?

My husband and I have planned a home birth, so our midwife came over yesterday. Poor thing, she hadn’t slept in days (due to her job, not me).

Anyway, I’m a bit dialated, but since there is no progress, life goes on as usual.

This past weekend was my birthday. Happy birthday to me! I got to celebrate my birthday in excruciating pain. I did have what is the beginings of real labor pains, as the contractions were awful painful.

But, today I shall be catered on by my darling husband who promised me pumpkin cupcakes and dinner.  Nice, right?

A Scarf for Tova

Recently a friend commissioned me to make an extra long scarf for her. She wanted it in a shade of dark blue. So, I found a lovely alpaca blend yarn, and came up with this:

The pics might be a little “lo-fi”, since I took them on my phone. My camera is acting up again.

What else? I’m sorry, but today I have no funny story to tell. I can tell you that I FINALLY organized my closet, where I keep all my supplies and things. Oh man. It’s so nice to open up my closet and see all my stuff. That was nice.

Hmmmm….well, halloween is next week. Are YOU ready? I’m going to dress up a little. Just my face, really. I want my husband to paint my face in a Day of the Dead sugar skull style. Cool, right? Maybe I’ll put my hair up, and go as a day of the dead Frida Kahlo.

So far, my daughter has changed her mind about her costume about 5 times. This is why we always do it last minute: because she first wanted to be a dog. Then, a cat. Then, a white cat, specifically. Now, she wants to be an easter bunny. Oh brother! Make up your mind, oh four year old.

Anyways, that’s all for today.

The Elf Hooded Cowl

So I really struggled with what to name this design. I really did. Let me show you some pics, first.

What do you think? This design was created by accident, of course. It was a totally different design, made way too big. And then of course, I didn’t feel like frogging it. So what’s a girl to do? Sew it up and repurpose it as a hooded cowl.

You can CLICK HERE to check it out at my etsy shop, and purchase it if you like. It would be nice if you did. When you purchase an item from a work at home mother, you’re ensuring her crafty goodness will keep on coming.

Anything else? OH! Yes. There is ONE MORE THING.

You all should know that I have an art group that I run through meetup. We meet everywhere and anywhere, but mostly at my apartment, and at spaces and places in brooklyn.

You also may or may not know this, but it has been my DREAM to have my own shop. Oh, I have always wanted to have a shop, where I sell all the wondrous and unique items that I use to create art with, and have a space to teach, and host crafting nights, and open mic nights.

So I’m hoping that you all will support my cause by PLEASE  donating to my project, on Indie GoGo. Please consider making a donation. PLEASE. And spread the word! Post it up on your facebook pages! That’s a big help too.

Crocheting, with friends

Recently, I taught a few friends of mine from my art group, how to crochet. Here’s a couple shots of the fun we had.

That’s Yarrow, learning the (I think) double crochet. Go, Yarrow, Go!

Nice, right? This one was made with Lion Brand Thick and Quick yarn.

It was so much fun! This weekend, it’s going to be bookbinding. I love book binding. In fact, I’ve got some new hand bound books I’ll be carrying in my shop soon.

What else?

Meh. Not much. It’s very busy in the Gonzalez household as we are all working on projects. Lots going on.

Anything else? No. Just nausea, as usual. The plus side is that at least it’s really nice out, so walking helps sometimes.

Crochet a Pretty Capelet

I love to crochet. Some time ago, I finished making this lovely capelet:

Here’s another version of it:

Cute, right?

This weekend, I’m teaching a class on how to crochet, where you can make a capelet such as either of these two. Crocheting is fun and easy to learn.

I hope you’re free this weekend, so you can come out, and learn (or get better at) crochet. Click here for RSVP details.

Mohair Crocheted Flower

So here’s the last piece of the swap. I made a sort of avant garde, oversized hair clip for my “Anthropologie” themed swap partner.

Anyway, that is that. I don’t have a pattern, because I kind of made it up. It’s just a crocheted strip that I rolled up and sewed together. But I’m sure there is a pattern out there, somewhere.

I made one for myself, also. A lovely shade of blue, because blue is one of my favorite colors, along with purple.

It’s Saturday. A few days ago, I went to the Martha Stewart show taping. I was in the audience. I love Martha Stewart, she totally inspires me. Today, I have a learn to crochet workshop at my lovely gravesend (Brooklyn) apartment. I’m baking banana almond muffins just for them. And good strong coffee. Gotta have that.
